Congratulations to all our athletes whom participated at today's Western Metropolitan Region State Qualifying Round, held in ideal conditions at Eastern Gardens, Geelong. 18 Children represented Melton South and did a fantastic job; achieving some outstanding results and recording a mountain of PBs. This year the State Cross Country Championships kick-off with the Western Metropolitan Region heats being held at Eastern Gardens, Geelong, on Sunday 22nd June. Walk the course will start at 9.30am. Competition starts at 10.00am. Melton South is required to provide 1 Official throughout the day. Parents of competing athletes will be asked to assist. Under 6 children may only compete at Region level. Cost is $1.00 per child, with the event run over 1000m. Under 7 & 8 children may compete at both events by invitation only. Cost is $3.00 per child, also run over 1000m. Under 9 & above must compete at Region to qualify for the State competition. Cost is $6.00 per child. Entries close Monday 9th June. Fees may be paid to Robin Van Niekerk, whom may be contacted on 9746 0485. The State Championships will be held on Sunday 3rd August at Lardner Park, Warragul. More details to follow. At the completion of yesterday's competition it became apparent that some confusion existed over the dates of our next local meeting and Western Region competition. The dates on our Calendar page remain correct. i.e. our next our local meeting is NEXT WEEK - Saturday 31st May. Region competition does not take place until Sunday 22nd June. It is suspected that some parents have confused the Geelong Open Day, which is to be held next week on Sunday 1st June, with the Region competition [which is also to be held at Geelong]. The following advice has been received from the VLAA regarding a change to the date of this year's State Cross Country Championships: "Recently the Victorian Little Athletics Association became aware that Athletics Victoria has scheduled the Victorian All Schools Cross Country Championships on Saturday 26th July which is the day before our rostered IGA State Cross Country Championships.
After discussions with both parties and after careful consideration we have decided to alter the date of this event as follows
Sunday 3rd August, 2008 Lardner Park, Warragul
The Board of Management in conjunction with the Competition Committee have reviewed the implications of competing on the original date which would no doubt affect the number of athletes involved, and the health and safety issues of some athletes endeavouring to compete twice in one weekend. We also have a commitment to providing IGA our major sponsor of the event the best possible outcome in terms of attendance." The above change has necessitated a small amendment to our Season Calendar, which now sees Competitiion Day #15 moved from 2nd August to 26th July. This change is reflected on our Calendar page. Weekly Results page updated. Update 13 April 08: Cross Country. The Cross Country Season kicked off this morning in terrific conditions with a good first week turnout of 36 competitors. The Season calendar has now been finalised and can be viewed on our Calendar page. In order to qualify for end-of-season trophies competitors must compete at a minimum of 10 normal competition days.
